BROWARD COUNTY, FL – A shocking incident aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise has raised serious privacy concerns for hundreds of passengers. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the cruise line and a former crew member, alleging that close to 1,000 people may have been secretly filmed in their cabins and bathrooms over the course of several voyages.
Cruise Line Accused of Negligence in Passenger Privacy Violation
The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of Florida on behalf of an anonymous passenger referred to as “Jane Doe,” seeks justice for the victims of hidden surveillance on board the Symphony of the Seas. The complaint extends to all other passengers potentially impacted by the secret recordings.
At the center of the controversy is Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a 34-year-old cabin attendant from the Philippines. Mirasol has already pleaded guilty to producing child pornography and is serving a 30-year sentence in federal prison. However, his criminal actions may have affected far more than just children.
Hidden Camera Discovered Mid-Cruise
The incident came to light on February 25 when a passenger discovered a hidden camera taped under a bathroom sink. Cruise security was alerted immediately, and Mirasol was taken into custody once the ship reached Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
An investigation revealed disturbing evidence on Mirasol’s electronic devices, including videos of children between the ages of 2 and 17 in various stages of undress. The investigation suggests his surveillance was not limited to minors, as adult passengers were also recorded in intimate moments, potentially without their knowledge or consent.
Surveillance Extended Across Multiple Voyages
The lawsuit claims Mirasol went beyond just using hidden cameras—allegedly hiding under passengers’ beds to spy on them. Videos from the recordings may have been uploaded to the internet, including dark web forums, where the footage could continue to circulate indefinitely.
According to the suit, these incidents spanned a three-month period between December 2023 and February 2024, affecting up to 960 passengers across 12 cruises. Despite the discovery, Royal Caribbean reportedly failed to inform all guests who had stayed in cabins accessed by Mirasol during that period.
Pattern of Neglect and Prior Incidents
The legal action highlights concerns over Royal Caribbean’s security practices, stating that the company should have anticipated and acted to prevent such privacy breaches. Reports of sexual assaults aboard the cruise line suggest a troubling trend. In 2023 alone, 26 assaults were reported during Royal Caribbean cruises, compared to 22 in 2022. Industry-wide, allegations of sexual assault have risen from 87 cases in 2022 to 131 in 2023.
The lawsuit also points out that in March 2023, a hidden camera was found in a public restroom aboard another Royal Caribbean ship. Yet, the cruise line appears to have taken no significant steps to prevent similar incidents, allowing Mirasol’s actions to go unchecked for months.
Lasting Impact and Legal Action Moving Forward
The situation leaves affected passengers with the grim reality that their most private moments may have been exposed online, possibly forever. Attorneys representing the plaintiffs argue that Royal Caribbean failed to safeguard passenger privacy and must be held accountable for the breach.
Royal Caribbean has not yet provided a public statement regarding the incident or the lawsuit. The case serves as a call for stronger protections for cruise passengers and stricter measures to prevent future privacy violations.
