HARVARD, MA – A runaway goat is back home with his “sad and scared” brother at a Massachusetts sanctuary after running loose for two days, rescuers said.
The Sowa Goat Sanctuary in Harvard said that as they were unloading goat brothers Caleb and Joey to get them settled into their new life at the sanctuary on Sunday, something “spooked” Caleb and he ran away, prompting a frantic search and the offer of a $5,000 reward.
Sanctuary staff searched along with local police and firefighters, even using a drone equipped with thermal imaging, but had no luck finding him.
The sanctuary put out flyers and posted in local groups online, asking anyone who spots Caleb not to chase him, and instead alert the sanctuary.
In an update on Tuesday, the sanctuary shared a video on Instagram showing volunteers assisting with retrieving Caleb from his hiding place less than a half-mile away.
“This afternoon as we were doing afternoon chores our neighbor Derek pulled into the driveway and said ‘I think I have your goat!'” the sanctuary wrote alongside the video.
Caleb was found “tucked into the back corner of [Derek’s] lean-to behind his tractor,” the sanctuary said.
“We had a huge team of volunteers and both our barn managers (Shannon and Kelly) to help and were able to get him safely in and out of the truck to reunite him with his brother Joey, who has been so sad and scared without him,” the sanctuary said.
The goat brothers “immediately started nuzzling and could not be happier to be back together in the safety of the sanctuary,” the sanctuary said.
Staff said Caleb was “shaken but completely unharmed physically and is eating, drinking, and resting now.”
