Emergency responders rushed to the apartment building after receiving a call about the child’s fall. Despite their efforts, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The father, Saleban Abdullahi Duale, 30, now faces charges of second-degree manslaughter. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Police spoke with Duale at the scene. He explained that he had been watching his children at his brother’s apartment. Duale claimed the child fell while he briefly stepped away from the living room. Child protection officials also interviewed the victim’s siblings, ages 8 and 9. Their memories are heartbreakingā€”one sibling recalled how their brother had been pushing on the window screen before he fell. According to them, their father had been on the phone “all day” in another room.

Duale remains out of custody at this time, but the charges filed against him point to a possible lengthy sentence if convicted.
