SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Mark your calendars because visitors strolling through Salt Lake City, Utah in 2027 will step into a rare moment in history. The Salt Lake Temple, a towering landmark of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will welcome the public for an open house from April to October. This follows years of major renovations, breathing new life into the iconic structure.
A Global Invitation to a Historic Event
President Russell M. Nelson, the church’s leader, has called on people worldwide to join the celebration.
“On February 14, 1853, a groundbreaking ceremony in Salt Lake City began a 40-year journey of faith and sacrifice, culminating in the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple in 1893,” he said.
Now, 172 years after that first shovel hit the dirt, Nelson—who celebrated his 100th birthday in September 2024—announced the temple’s grand reopening on February 14, 2025.
Renovation Nears Completion
The temple, known for its striking spires, has been under a sweeping renovation effort. While work continues, much of Temple Square remains accessible. Crowds can catch glimpses of the progress from spots like the Main Street Plaza and Conference Center.
Nearby buildings, such as the Tabernacle, Church History Museum, and FamilySearch Library, also stay open, alongside updated plazas at Main Street and the Church Office Building.
A Call to Temples Worldwide
With nearly 18 million members across the globe, the church has temples scattered far and wide. Nelson encouraged participation at local temples ahead of the big event.
“As houses of the Lord now dot the earth, I invite you to cherish your time and service at the temples closest to you as we prepare for the reopening of the Salt Lake Temple in 2027,” he said.
What to Expect in 2027
The open house will run for six months, offering a chance to explore the temple’s rich past and its role in the faith. Details about the event will roll out as the April 2027 start date approaches.
This unique opportunity promises to draw visitors eager to experience a cornerstone of Utah’s religious heritage firsthand.
