SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A San Francisco restaurant has terminated an employee after a customer received a receipt with a racist message. The incident occurred at Pica Pica Arepa Kitchen, located in the Mission District, and has left a visiting family from the East Coast deeply disturbed.
The Washington family, who had traveled to California for a vacation, was dining at the restaurant on Monday afternoon when they discovered the offensive message on their receipt. Whitney Washington, who was with her family, noticed the racial slur printed on their receipt shortly after placing their order. It read: ‘here N-word.’
Targeted Incident Raises Concerns
Washington and her family were shocked to find that their receipt contained a racial slur in the upper right-hand corner. After checking with other customers, it became clear that the slur was only present on their receipt.
Washington pointed out that they were the only Black customers in the restaurant at the time, adding to their concern that they were specifically targeted.
Washington returned the food, requested a refund, and sought an explanation from the staff. When she confronted the employee, he claimed ignorance, stating that he did not know how the message appeared on the receipt.
Despite this, Washington managed to capture a photo of the receipt before the employee took it from her.
Immediate Action Taken by Management
The restaurant’s management was made aware of the incident shortly after it occurred. A manager, identified only as Vena, responded swiftly, confirming that the employee responsible had been fired immediately.
According to Vena, the former employee was unable to provide any explanation for his actions. She also mentioned that the employee attempted to shift blame and even threatened legal action against the restaurant after being terminated.
The manager expressed her dismay over the incident, emphasizing that such behavior is entirely unacceptable and not reflective of the restaurant’s values. She assured that appropriate measures were taken to address the situation.
Aftermath and Ongoing Concerns
Washington and her family have since returned home to Maryland, but the incident has left a lasting impact. Although Washington acknowledged the diversity and beauty of San Francisco, she also emphasized the importance of confronting and speaking out against racism.
San Francisco police have confirmed that a report regarding the racist message was filed. However, it remains unclear what further action, if any, will be taken.
This incident has sparked conversations about racial sensitivity and the responsibility of businesses to create safe and inclusive environments for all customers.
