MIAMI, FL — An American Airlines flight bound for Miami, Florida was forced to return to Savannah, Georgia, on Monday night after a passenger, Delange Augustin, aged 31, displayed disruptive behavior shortly after takeoff. The incident, detailed in an arrest affidavit, unfolded in front of a small group of about eight passengers aboard the plane.
Incident Unfolds Mid-Flight
The trouble began when Augustin started yelling and shaking, a reaction initially mistaken by the crew for a seizure.
The situation escalated as he swallowed rosary beads and claimed that “Satan’s disciples” had followed him onto the aircraft.
According to his sister, with whom he was traveling, Augustin ingested the beads as a source of strength in what he described as spiritual warfare. She also noted that he urged her to close her eyes and pray, warning of a “legion” determined to prevent their journey to Haiti, where they were headed to escape what she called religious attacks of a spiritual nature.
The disruption turned physical when Augustin kicked a flight attendant in the chest, sending them crashing into a window across the aisle.
FBI Special Agent Savannah Solomon, in the affidavit, described his actions as appearing purposeful, though hard to fully explain.
Pilots Turn Plane Around
The pilots quickly decided to return to Savannah, landing the aircraft safely. After touchdown, Augustin rushed to the front of the plane and threw multiple punches at a flight attendant. Fellow passengers intervened, restraining both Augustin and his sister to the floor until authorities could take over.
No one suffered serious injuries during the ordeal, according to the affidavit. American Airlines praised the professionalism of its crew and expressed gratitude to passengers for their patience and understanding.
Aftermath and Charges
Following the incident, Augustin was taken to a hospital due to swallowing the rosary beads. He was later booked into jail, facing charges of misdemeanor battery and criminal property damage.
His sister was also detained, though further details about her status remain unclear.
The event left a lasting impression on the small group aboard, marking an unusual disruption to what began as a routine flight.
A Moment for Reflection

The flight attendant who endured a frightening assault and the passengers who stepped in to help deserve recognition for their resilience in the face of an unsettling ordeal. The Savannah community, though briefly shaken by this unusual event, showed strength as passengers and crew worked together to ensure safety. This incident offers a chance to find comfort in the everyday courage that emerges even in the most unexpected situations. Thanks for reading this article, we appreciate it!
