STEVENSON, WA – The dense, towering trees of Gifford Pinchot National Forest were silent, save for the crunch of leaves underfoot as a hunter scoured the rugged terrain. The crisp Washington state air carried the faint scent of pine, and a chill lingered in the shadows of the towering evergreens. But amidst the wilderness, an eerie discovery shattered the stillness.

Last week, a hunter reported finding a skull near the Sawtooth Berry Fields, prompting an immediate response from the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office.

This is the second human skull being found in the area within the last month. A detective was sent to the exact location given by the hunter, where the skull was confirmed to be human.

Forensic Investigation Underway

The skull is being sent for forensic analysis to determine its identity. At this time, there is no indication of public safety concerns, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

On August 10, another skull was found by a hiker near the Big Lava Bed, a volcanic area also within the forest. Further remains were recovered from that site, which authorities believe may belong to a hiker who went missing in 2013.

Authorities Seek Connections

While no official connection between the two discoveries has been made, both finds occurred within the same region of Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Authorities are continuing their investigations into the origins of both sets of remains.

As investigators work to unravel the mystery behind these human remains, the quiet, expansive forest holds onto its secrets.

Two skulls in a single month—both found by chance—leave unsettling questions about what else may lie hidden beneath the surface. How many more stories remain untold in the vast wilderness? Share your thoughts on this eerie discovery in the comments below.
