From Autographs to Artifacts
It all started back in 1884 when an Iowan named Charles Aldrich donated a modest collection of autographs, photos, and manuscripts. Fast forward to today, and the museum’s collection has grown to over 100,000 items! 📜 The Visible Vault is just a small sampling of the incredible pieces they’ve acquired over the years.
Neon Signs and Civil War Rifles
As you wander through the Visible Vault, you’ll come across all sorts of fascinating artifacts. 🏺 There’s the “National Torch of Light” neon sign that used to light up the National Travelers Life Building in Des Moines, and beautifully crafted rifles from the pre-Civil War era. You can even check out stone tools made by some of Iowa’s earliest residents! 🪨
