The lowest inhabitable point in Chicago isn’t in a basement or a subway tunnel – it’s actually part of the city’s massive Deep Tunnel project, designed to prevent flooding and improve water quality. The Calumet TARP Pumping Station, located 365 feet below the Riverdale neighborhood, holds the record for the deepest spot in the city.
The Deep Tunnel system spans more than 110 miles and has been under construction for decades, making it one of the largest civil engineering projects in the country’s history. Curious Chicagoans can even tour the Calumet station and other parts of the system to see this impressive feat of engineering up close.
