SAWYER COUNTY, WI – Residents of Sawyer County, Wisconsin are on edge as authorities continue their search for a serial arsonist believed to be responsible for at least six fires across the area since November 18. The recent string of fires has rattled this normally peaceful region of northwestern Wisconsin, leaving behind damage to both residential and commercial properties. With the firestarter still at large, local officials are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Timeline of Fires Across Sawyer County
The arson spree began in the early hours of November 18, with three fires reported within an eight-hour window. At 4:02 a.m., firefighters responded to a structure fire at an unoccupied house under construction on Weirgor Road in Radisson. That building was destroyed in the blaze. Just eight minutes later, at 4:10 a.m., another fire broke out at a vacant home on Gueldners Lane in the town of Meteor, which also sustained significant damage.
The third fire of the morning was reported at 6:02 a.m. at the Birchwood American Legion Post, located on County Highway F in Edgewater. Fortunately, the building was empty at the time, preventing any injuries.
In the days that followed, investigators linked additional fires to the suspected arsonist. On November 23, a fire at DJ’s Mart gas station in Radisson was believed to be the work of the same individual. Since then, two more fires have been attributed to the arsonist.
Surveillance Video Released in Search for Suspect
To aid in the investigation, the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office released surveillance footage of the suspect, though the images do not provide a clear view of their face. The video shows an individual walking away from one of the fire locations, wearing a black hoodie with the hood up and khaki cargo pants. Authorities are hoping someone can recognize the person’s appearance or clothing.
Sheriff Foug Mrotek emphasized the importance of community cooperation in bringing the arsonist to justice, stating, “We are committed to protecting our community and bringing those responsible for these dangerous acts to justice. We urge anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.”
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal for Help
The investigation into the fires has drawn assistance from both the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Authorities are working diligently to identify the person responsible and prevent further damage.
