WASHINGTON, D.C. – Health inspectors have uncovered serious violations at the Boar’s Head facility in Jarratt, Virginia, which is tied to a nationwide listeria outbreak that has claimed at least nine lives. The disturbing findings include the presence of bugs, pools of blood on the floor, and mold growing on equipment.

Last month, Boar’s Head recalled over 7 million pounds of deli meats and poultry products after it was identified as the source of the outbreak.

According to the CDC, the outbreak has resulted in 57 hospitalizations and nine deaths across 18 states. New York has reported the highest number of cases, with 17 residents falling ill from the contaminated products.

The recall has affected states including South Carolina, New Jersey, Virginia, Illinois, Florida, Tennessee, and New Mexico. The company has urged customers and businesses to check their products and clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with the affected meats.

USDA records obtained by CBS News reveal troubling conditions at the plant, including 69 records of noncompliance issued over the past year.

Inspectors documented a rancid smell, pools of blood, and mold in various areas of the plant.

Reports from February 21, January 9, and June 1 highlighted these issues, with one report noting “15-20 flies” around pickle vats and gnats crawling on walls.

Since the recall in July, all operations at the Jarratt plant have been suspended. Boar’s Head is collaborating with food safety experts to investigate the outbreak’s source and address the plant’s conditions.
