EL PASO, TX – Classes were canceled at a Texas high school on Thursday after a man was shot and killed by a responding police officer outside the school before classes began, officials said.
El Paso Independent School District Police Department Chief Manuel Chavira said during a news conference Thursday that an officer responded to a report of an unspecified incident at the perimeter of Franklin High School at around 6 a.m.
“We want to ensure the public that the incident was isolated to Franklin High School in the early morning hours,” Chavira said. “It did not affect any students, faculty or staff. All other district campuses are safe and secure.”
The man who was killed, described only as being in his 50s, was not identified. The El Paso Police Department and Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, as per protocol for officer-involved shootings.
The only students at the campus at the time of the incident were cross-country athletes, though they were not in the area where the shooting occurred, Chavira said.
The students were placed in lockdown and remained safe throughout the incident, he said.
Classes and after-school activities were canceled Thursday while the investigation was underway, the school district said. The school was expected to resume classes on Friday.
