AUSTIN, MN – The Shooting Star State Trail is a 28.75-mile paved pathway that takes you through the breathtaking remnants of tall grass prairies, where an abundance of native wildflowers create a stunning display of natural beauty. Built largely on an abandoned railroad grade, this Minnesota trail offers a unique and immersive experience for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and history buffs alike.
🌿 From Le Roy to Austin: A Prairie Adventure
The trail’s eastern terminus is located in Le Roy, MN, situated on MN Highway 56, just west of its junction with US 63 and a stone’s throw from the Iowa/Minnesota state line.
As you set out on your journey, you’ll soon find yourself passing through the picturesque Lake Louise State Park before continuing northwest to the charming towns of Taopi, Adams, and Rose Creek. The final leg of the trail takes you north out of Rose Creek, connecting with Austin’s network of city trails just north of Interstate 90.
🌸 Wildflowers and Natural Wonders
One of the most remarkable features of the Shooting Star State Trail is the opportunity to witness the beauty of remnant tallgrass prairie and its diverse array of wildflowers.
As you traverse the trail, keep an eye out for prairie smoke, rattlesnake master, wild indigo, aster, goldenrod, and the trail’s namesake, the blazing star wildflower. These native species create a vibrant tapestry of color and texture that changes with the seasons, offering a captivating experience for visitors year-round.
🌳 Interpretive and Recreational Opportunities
Along the Shooting Star State Trail, you’ll encounter several interpretive and recreational areas that provide deeper insights into the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
The Rustic Retreat Wildlife Management Area, Shooting Star Prairie Scientific and Natural Area, Taopi Prairie Interpretive Area, and Mower County Natural and Scenic Area are just a few of the highlights that await you on your journey. These destinations offer a chance to learn about the ecosystem, wildlife, and history of the area while enjoying the great outdoors.
🔗 Connecting Trails and Future Expansions
While the Shooting Star State Trail is an impressive standalone destination, it also serves as a vital link in a larger network of trails. Plans are in place to extend the trail southward from Austin to the town of Lyle on the Minnesota-Iowa border, although a timeline for this project has not yet been established.
However, a more imminent extension is in the works, which will connect the trail from near Taopi to the Minnesota-Iowa border, linking up with the Wapsi-Great Western Line Trail. This 27-mile paved trail travels southeast from the state border into Elma, IA, and together with Austin’s city trails, will create a remarkable 72-mile trail network.
🌲 The Shooting Star State Trail
The Shooting Star State Trail is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and rich history of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. With its stunning prairie landscapes, abundant wildflowers, and connections to other trails and recreational areas, this 28.75-mile paved pathway offers an unforgettable experience for cyclists, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.
