WHITEWATER, WIUniversity of Wisconsin-Whitewater student-athlete Kara Welsh, 21, was fatally shot at an off-campus apartment near the university on Friday night, according to police.

In times of sorrow, we can find comfort in God’s promises. As we mourn the loss of Kara Welsh, let us hold onto the words of Psalm 147:3: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” May we find solace in God’s embrace and strength in His peace during this difficult time.

Welsh, who had recently won a national title on the vault with the Warhawk gymnastics team, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred around midnight, just a block from the university’s main campus.

A 23-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Police believe that Welsh knew the suspect, though the specifics of their relationship remain unclear.

The man faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety with a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Chancellor, Corey King, confirmed Welsh’s death in a message to the university community.

“Kara was majoring in management and was a standout member of our gymnastics team,” King said. “Her loss is deeply felt across our close-knit community.”

In response to the tragedy, the university has announced that counseling services will be available for students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, the school’s flag will be flown at half-staff on September 3, the start of the fall semester.
