What’s in a Name? Smokey Bear vs. Smokey the Bear

In 1952, songwriters Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins penned a catchy tune that added “the” between “Smokey” and “Bear” to maintain the song’s rhythm. This led many fans to call him “Smokey the Bear,” but officially, his name remains Smokey Bear. This name, along with his message, has become a vital part of American culture and wildfire prevention efforts.
