GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, AZ – A solo backpacker was found dead in Grand Canyon National Park on Wednesday, after failing to check in with family members, the National Park Service said in a statement Thursday.
The backpacker, identified only as a 60-year-old man from North Carolina, was on a multi-day solo backpacking trip from Thunder River to Deer Creek when he missed a check-in with a family member.
At around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report that the backpacker was missing, prompting a search of the area.
The backpacker’s body was located at around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday by NPS search and rescue personnel searching via helicopter. The body was located along a route connecting Lower Tapeats Camp and Deer Creek Camp.
Park officials did not provide a possible cause of death, and said an investigation by NPS in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner is underway. Use the comments below to leave a caring note for the family and friends of the backpacker.
