The Science Behind the Equinox

So, what exactly is an equinox? Well, it’s when the Earth’s axis and its orbit line up just right, giving both hemispheres about the same amount of sunshine. It’s like the sun is playing fair and giving everyone an equal chance to enjoy its warmth. The word equinox actually comes from two Latin words that mean equal and night, because on this day, the amount of daylight and darkness is almost the same.

Meteorological vs. Astronomical Spring

Now, you might be thinking, didn’t we already celebrate the start of spring on March 1st? Well, that was meteorological spring, which is based on weather patterns and temperature cycles. Astronomical spring, on the other hand, is all about how the Earth moves around the sun. It’s like the difference between using a calendar and using the stars to tell time.

What to Expect This Spring

So, what can we expect this spring? According to weather experts, the northern parts of the US are in for some warmer-than-usual temperatures, especially in the Pacific Northwest and New England. The southern states might see a mix of above and below-average temperatures, so it’s anyone’s guess!

One thing to keep an eye on is the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which is expected to shift to neutral conditions by the end of spring or early summer. This could bring some changes to our weather patterns, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
