PHILADELPHIA, PA – In the early hours of October 2, thieves slipped aboard the SS United States, a retired ocean liner docked in Philadelphia, using a pulley system to make their way inside. Surveillance footage released by the Philadelphia Police Department this week captures the daring heist, sparking public concern over the vulnerability of the storied vessel.
Details of the Break-In
The incident took place at Pier 82 on South Christopher Columbus Boulevard, where the SS United States has been stationed since 1996. Around 1:40 a.m., the suspects were recorded accessing the ship using a pulley mechanism.
At least four individuals were seen on camera inside the ship, with faces partially covered by T-shirts worn as masks. The group spent about three hours aboard the vessel before making their exit with stolen tools, batteries, and other items.
A Storied Ship with a New Future on the Horizon
The SS United States has long stood as a piece of maritime history. However, recent headlines have shifted focus toward its legal battles. Pier operator Penn Warehousing and Distribution reached a settlement with the SS United States Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that oversees the vessel.
The settlement clears the way for a long-awaited plan to convert the ship into an artificial reef in partnership with Okaloosa County, Florida—a move aimed at giving the vessel a second life beneath the ocean’s surface.
Arrests and Public Appeal for Information
According to Fox 29, a 17-year-old boy involved in the burglary has already turned himself in to police, facing charges of trespassing and burglary. Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying other suspects captured in the surveillance footage.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the police or submit an anonymous tip.
