St. Paul, Minnesota – Twin Cities golfers got an unexpected treat as the Highland National Golf Course driving range opened its doors a month early. The reason? An unusually warm spell brought a record-breaking high of 72 degrees on March 3rd. The warm weather had locals swapping their winter gear for golf clubs, with every one of the 64 bays filled to the brim.
Kenny DuPré, a golfer, expressed his surprise at playing golf in shorts instead of partaking in typical winter activities like ice fishing or skiing. Nearby, Corey Ganser was seizing the opportunity to introduce his son to golf for the first time.
The driving range’s early opening was a welcome surprise for many, with Highland’s assistant manager, Jeff Romans, expressing joy at the extended golf season gifted to Minnesotans.
The strong winds accompanying the warm temperatures were a boon for golfers, adding extra distance to their shots. However, the same winds proved challenging for disc golfers in the area.
Nico Stern, a local disc golfer, remarked on the unusual winter, comparing it to the milder winters in Kansas.
Despite the pleasant weather, golfers remain cautious, knowing that a Minnesota March could still bring snow. For now, the golf course remains closed as preparations continue for the upcoming season.
