ST. PAUL, MN – A search is underway for a Minnesota man accused of killing his pregnant wife and carrying out additional violent crimes as he fled the scene in St. Paul. Community members are expressing outrage, pointing to this case as another example of the justice system’s failure after the suspect’s release from prison earlier this year.

Released Murderer on the Run After Fatal Shooting

Authorities are looking for 36-year-old Mychel Stowers, who is accused of fatally shooting his wife, Damara Alexis Stowers, inside her apartment on Sycamore Street East on Saturday night. Damara, 35, was about nine weeks pregnant.

Stowers had been released on parole in March after serving time for a 2008 murder. Just months after his release, he filed for divorce from Damara in June. Now, he faces multiple charges, including two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of both Damara and the unborn child.

Community members are speaking out, calling this tragedy a clear indication that Minnesota’s criminal justice system is putting dangerous offenders back on the streets too soon.

A Trail of Violence During the Escape

Police responded to a 911 call around 9:08 p.m. Saturday, finding Damara lying lifeless in a spare bedroom of her apartment. Stowers fled the scene, allegedly shooting another man and stealing his Audi A4.

A second individual present during the carjacking told officers that Stowers had also fired at him, but the bullet missed. That man’s cellphone was inside the stolen Audi, giving investigators a way to track the vehicle.

Tracking Stowers: Cellphones and Car Clues

Police traced the stolen phone to Cretin Avenue, where a young man told officers he had found it along Mississippi River Boulevard. He explained that he took the phone home, hoping someone would call so he could return it to its owner.

Further investigation revealed that both Stowers’ phone and the stolen phone had been active in the area between Marshall Avenue and Mississippi River Boulevard for an hour following the initial crime.

Officers recovered the stolen Audi on Oct. 24 in the 1900 block of St. Clair Avenue, but there was still no sign of Stowers.

Failed Surrender and Nationwide Warrant

In a bizarre twist, Stowers contacted the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office after the shooting, claiming he was ready to turn himself in. However, he never followed through on his promise, prompting officials to issue a nationwide warrant for his arrest on Thursday.

Residents in St. Paul and beyond are now left questioning how someone convicted of murder could be released only to commit another violent crime. Authorities are urging anyone with information about Stowers’ whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately.

This case isn’t just a local tragedy; it’s a chilling example of the consequences when violent offenders are released too soon. For many in the community, it’s become a troubling symbol of a system in desperate need of reform.
