IDAHO SPRINGS, CO – Authorities in Colorado are searching for Doberman puppies after a breeder was killed in his home last week and a litter was stolen, possibly to be sold.

Breeder Paul Peavey, 57, was found dead in his home in Idaho Springs on Saturday, three days after he was reported missing. According to the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, as many as 10 puppies, which can sell for thousands of dollars, are unaccounted for.

Investigators say the puppies may have been sold “through social media sites or by other means sometime since Tuesday, Aug. 20.

All of Peavey’s puppies were microchipped, and investigators are asking members of the public who may have recently purchased a Doberman in the central Colorado area to check for a microchip and contact the sheriff’s office, so they can determine whether the puppy was one of Peavey’s.

The sheriff’s office is also asking anyone who has purchased a puppy through Peavey’s business, Elite European Dobermans, since June to contact them, whether they have yet received the puppy or not, so they can determine how many puppies are still unaccounted for.

On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said they had received several tips about a Craigslist ad for Doberman puppies in the Colorado Springs area, but the ad was legitimate and the seller cooperated with the investigation.

Investigators said that seller is not involved in the homicide. Anyone with information is asked to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
