CHAMPLAIN, NY – A wrong turn near the Canadian border turned into a major legal mess for one New York man. What began as a U-turn to avoid crossing into Canada ended with felony charges, a stolen van recovery, and the discovery of a loaded rifle.
Surprise Stop at Champlain Port of Entry
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) reported that officers encountered a 2002 Chevrolet Astro van attempting to re-enter the U.S. on Tuesday at the Champlain Port of Entry in New York. The driver, a U.S. citizen, explained to officers that he had performed a U-turn after realizing he didn’t intend to enter Canada.
CBP officers noticed “anomalies” during the interaction, prompting them to refer the driver and vehicle for a secondary inspection.
Rifle and Ammo Uncovered During Inspection
The additional search revealed a loaded Ruger rifle along with 70 rounds of ammunition inside the van. Officers secured the firearm before continuing their investigation into the vehicle.
Discovery of a Stolen Van
With help from New York State Police, CBP officers confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen. The driver was taken into custody on-site.
Steve Bronson, Area Port Director at the Champlain Port of Entry, praised the officers involved, stating, “Our dedicated officers continue to intercept criminal activity to keep our communities and country safe. Their skills, experience, and knowledge, along with our strong relationships with local law enforcement, have led to continued success.”
Driver Arrested and Charged with Felonies
The suspect, identified in New York State Police arrest records as 35-year-old Aaron Freedman, now faces multiple felony charges. Among them is criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree. Freedman was turned over to New York State Police for further processing, along with the rifle, ammunition, and stolen vehicle.
Freedman’s arrest highlights how a seemingly minor situation—a U-turn—can quickly escalate. Thanks to the diligence of CBP officers and their coordination with local law enforcement, another stolen vehicle and illegal firearm were intercepted, ensuring safety on both sides of the border.
