The Tragic Love Story Behind the Haunting
Burlington, Iowa – In this charming Iowa town there’s a dark secret lurking in the shadows. Stony Hollow Road, a short, rural country road, is known as the most haunted road in the state. The story behind its haunting is a tragic tale of love and loss.
Legend has it that in the 1800s, a young woman named Lucinda was waiting for her husband at the top of a cliff overlooking the road. As time passed and her husband didn’t arrive, Lucinda grew more and more distraught. Convinced that he had run off with another woman, she made the fateful decision to jump from the cliff, ending her life.
A Haunting Presence on the Road
Tragically, Lucinda’s husband arrived soon after, only to find his beloved bride had taken her own life. He had been delayed due to his wagon getting stuck in the mud. From that day forward, the spot on the road has been haunted by Lucinda’s ghost.
Locals know better than to venture down Stony Hollow Road after dark. During the day, it may seem like any other Iowa farm road, but at night, an eerie presence fills the air. Brave souls who dare to summon Lucinda’s spirit are warned to tread carefully.
Summoning the Ghost of Stony Hollow Road
To call upon Lucinda, you must go to the cliff on Stony Hollow Road after dark and shout her name three times. If you’re lucky (or perhaps unlucky), the faint figure of the suicidal bride will appear at the top of the cliff. But beware! If Lucinda lays a rose at your feet, it’s said that you’ll meet a tragic fate within the next day or two.
Despite the warnings, summoning Lucinda’s ghost has become a sort of Iowa ghost-hunting tradition. However, those who attempt to contact her should be warned that she is easily scared away, so it’s best to go alone.
