Strange Things Found in the Basement: Creepy (and True) Stories From the Heartland!
Strange finds from basements across the Midwest: from creepy dolls to hidden cash, you won’t believe what people have uncovered! 🌐 #News #Lifestyle #HumanInterest #WeirdNews
ST. PAUL, MN – The other day, Jack and I decided to clean out the basement. You know, that dreaded task we put off for years. We’ve moved a few times, and our basement here in Minnesota has somehow accumulated piles of stuff that neither of us remembered owning.
While we didn’t find anything too bizarre (unless you count Jack’s old homemade cigar box guitars), it got me thinking—what kinds of strange things have other people found hiding in their basements? Turns out, people in the Midwest have uncovered some seriously weird stuff.
A Bizarre Time Capsule Found in Iowa
Emma P. from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was going through an old trunk in her basement when she came across what looked like a time capsule from the early 1900s. The trunk was stuffed with letters, black-and-white photos, and strange trinkets like a pocket watch with no hands.
But the creepiest find was a photo of a family standing in front of a farmhouse, with a faint figure looming in the background that nobody could explain. Emma couldn’t shake the eerie feeling she got from that photo. “It was like something out of a horror movie,” she told me.
To this day, no one knows who the family in the photo was or why their belongings ended up in Emma’s basement. Some speculate that the items belonged to the original owners of the house, but the identity of the mysterious figure remains unsolved.
The Underground Pet Cemetery of Wisconsin
Madison, Wisconsin resident Jim D. was shocked when he stumbled across a mini pet cemetery in the corner of his crawl space. While doing some repairs, he uncovered tiny gravestones marked with names like “Minnie” and “Mittens,” dating back decades.
At first, he thought it was some kind of weird joke. But the more he dug around, the more stones he found—there were at least fifteen little memorials scattered around.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Jim said. “Who buries their pets under their home? And why so many?” His theory is that the house’s previous owner was a devoted animal lover who didn’t want to part with their furry friends even after death.
After consulting with a local historian, Jim discovered that it was somewhat common in the early 1900s for people to bury pets on their property, though usually not in basements.
A Mysterious Cache of Cash in Minnesota
While renovating her Minneapolis home, Sarah M. made an unexpected and potentially life-changing discovery. Behind one of the basement walls, she found a stash of old bills amounting to nearly $10,000! The money was wrapped in brittle newspapers, leading Sarah to wonder if it had been hidden away by someone who had lived through the Great Depression.
“I thought it was a joke at first, like one of those fake prop stacks of cash,” Sarah laughed. “But then I realized it was real money. I was shaking!”
Sarah faced a moral dilemma—should she keep the money, or turn it over to the authorities? In the end, she decided to keep a portion, donate some to charity, and use the rest to pay off a few household bills. To this day, she still doesn’t know who hid the money or why.
The Creepiest Doll Collection in Nebraska
Omaha, Nebraska resident Mark L. discovered a basement filled with antique dolls when he bought a home he planned on flipping.
“We bought a hoarder’s home and I was doing an inventory of the basement, and then I saw them—hundreds of dolls, some of them old and falling apart, just sitting there staring at me,” he said. The dolls weren’t just sitting on shelves; they were arranged in strange poses, with some even hanging from the rafters by their arms and legs.
Mark says it felt like something out of a nightmare. “I know it sounds crazy, but every time I went down there, I swear I could hear them creaking and shifting around,” he said.
Mark ended up donating most of the dolls to a local museum, but he kept a few for sentimental reasons, including one he claims moves on its own from time to time – I think he might just be trying to scare me with that part of his story! Hehe.
Adding to the eerie nature of the find, Mark learned that the house was rumored to be haunted by its previous owner—a woman who was obsessed with collecting dolls. Some locals even believe that her spirit might still be hanging around, keeping watch over the collection.
