Strong Start for Borealis Service!

WINONA, MN – The Borealis, a daily passenger train, began its journey on May 21. Stopping in our home town Winona, Minnesota along the way, it offers round trips between St. Paul, Milwaukee, and Chicago.

Early passenger numbers show the Borealis is popular. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) reported that the train carried 604 passengers daily from its launch until the end of May. This information comes from Amtrak’s monthly performance report.

Passenger Breakdown

Between May 21 and May 31, the daily average for westbound passengers was 329. Eastbound passengers averaged 275 daily. In total, 6,600 passengers traveled on the Borealis during this 11-day period.

Complementing the Empire Builder

The Borealis is the second daily service on the 411-mile route between St. Paul and Chicago. It complements the Empire Builder, which runs between Chicago and Seattle, passing through St. Paul.

With fewer stops, the Borealis completes the journey about 30 minutes quicker than the Empire Builder, taking approximately 7 hours and 20 minutes.

Potential Expansion

The Borealis’ success has sparked discussions about adding more services. Ramsey County Board Chair Trista Martinson hinted that Amtrak might consider a third daily service between St. Paul and Chicago.
