ST. PAUL, MN – As Super Bowl LIX approaches, over a third of Minnesotans are ready to feast on delivered meals during the game, according to a new Chatmeter consumer report. However, high delivery fees are keeping many fans away, leading them to opt for takeout or homemade snacks instead.
Restaurants nationwide are gearing up for a massive rush of orders as the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Fans are expected to indulge in game-day staples like pizza, wings, and burgersâwhether they order delivery or pick it up themselves.
Why Some Fans Are Avoiding Delivery
Chatmeter, a multi-location customer intelligence firm, reviewed more than 2 million customer experiences using its Pulse AI: Signals platform. The data reveals why many consumers are steering clear of delivery services. For 55% of them, high fees are the biggest deterrent. Others blame long wait times (43%), cold food (41%), and higher menu prices on delivery apps (39%).
Negative past experiences with delivery drivers (22%) and the expectation to tip (20%) were also reasons fans preferred other options.
Delivery Demand Still High Despite Issues
Despite the complaints, 36% of Americans plan to use food delivery services for the Big Game, and 37% of those customers expect to spend more than they did last year. Among delivery users, 42% say they prefer to avoid cooking so they can focus on the game or enjoy time with friends and family.
Many will also take advantage of special deals from popular delivery apps like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Grubhub. In fact, 35% of those planning to order food this weekend are doing so with discounts in mind.
Common Delivery Complaints Could Impact the Big Day
For those relying on delivery, recent issues may cause concern. About half of consumers report experiencing late deliveries or receiving food that was cold upon arrival. Additionally, 44% have had items missing from their orders.
Chatmeterâs Pulse AI revealed that over half of delivery-related reviews were either negative (46%) or mixed (6%) in sentiment. Many of these complaints involve rude staff or poor customer service when customers try to resolve problems.
What Fans Are Orderingâand What They Arenât
Not all foods are delivery-friendly, according to consumers. Pizza tops the list as the best item to order, followed by wings, sandwiches, burgers, and tacos.
However, seafood, ice cream, steak, and french fries ranked as the worst foods to have delivered due to quality issues upon arrival.
Chatmeter CEO Warns of Risks for Restaurants
Chatmeter CEO John Mazur emphasized the importance of restaurant strategy during key events like the Super Bowl.
âAmericans love the convenience of delivery, but restaurants who hand the experience over to third-party apps without a strategy risk their reputations,â Mazur said in a statement.
With so much on the line this weekend, restaurants are urged to fine-tune their promotions, menu offerings, and customer service to ensure a successfulâand complaint-freeâSuper Bowl Sunday.
