MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Screams echoed through the streets of downtown Minneapolis early Saturday morning as a speeding car tore into a crowd, leaving chaos and devastation in its wake. What began as a late-night altercation quickly turned deadly when a driver reversed into pedestrians, turning a bustling intersection into a scene of horror. Now an innocent 16-year-old girl is dead and several others are injured. As for the driver? Busted! Thank God.
Altercation Turns Deadly
The Minneapolis Police Department reports the tragic incident took place shortly after midnight at the busy intersection of Hennepin Avenue and 5th Street North. The area, which sees frequent foot traffic near the Warehouse District light rail station, became the scene of a deadly crash following an altercation.
After an argument between a group of people, a woman involved got into a vehicle. Moments later, she reversed onto Hennepin Avenue and drove against traffic along 5th Street North, where she struck the crowd. Six people were rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center.
Sadly, the teenage girl later died from her injuries, while another victim remains in critical condition. Four others sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Arrest Made Following Witness Pursuit
After the incident, the driver fled the scene. However, quick-thinking witnesses followed her and provided information to the police.
Officers were able to apprehend the suspect on the 2300 block of Bryant Avenue North. The woman is currently in custody at Hennepin County Jail and faces charges of murder.
Authorities are investigating to piece together the exact details of what led to the crash.
