Chicago, Illinois – Attention, Windy City! Get ready to make a splash in the Chicago River this September! After almost 100 years, the City of Chicago is finally hosting an open water swim event along the stunning Riverwalk. Can you imagine diving into the cool, refreshing waters and gliding past the iconic skyline? It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!
A Swim to Remember
On September 22, 2024, brave swimmers will take the plunge between Clark and Dearborn streets, swimming east to Wabash before circling back to Wolf Point. Doug McConnell, the mastermind behind A Long Swim, is thrilled to bring this exciting event to the Windy City.
Overcoming Perceptions
Now, you might be thinking, “Wait a minute, isn’t the Chicago River a bit… icky?” Well, think again! Friends of the Chicago River is here to set the record straight. Thanks to the incredible tunnel and reservoir plan (aka “deep tunnel”), the chances of encountering any unsavory substances in the river have been reduced by a whopping 85%! That’s right, folks – the river is cleaner than ever and ready for you to take a dip.
A Cause Close to the Heart
But this swim isn’t just about making a splash – it’s also about making a difference. The event will serve as a fundraiser for ALS research, a cause that hits close to home for Doug McConnell. His sister, who was diagnosed with ALS, came up with the idea of open water swimming as a way to contrast the challenges faced by ALS patients. Talk about turning a negative into a positive!
Make Your Move
So, what are you waiting for? Registration is already open, but you better act fast – only 500 qualified swimmers will be allowed to participate. And don’t forget, you’ll need to show proof of previous open water swims to be approved. It’s time to dust off those goggles and get ready to make history in the Chicago River! Have fun!
