Minneapolis, Minnesota – Retail giant, Target, is making a dramatic shift from its ‘Tar-jay’ image to a budget-friendly brand with nearly 400 products priced mostly under $10.
The new “dealworthy” brand, launched on Thursday, includes essentials and apparel aimed at attracting budget-conscious shoppers. This move comes as customers seek affordable alternatives, with over half of shoppers surveyed planning to buy private-label grocery brands to save money.
Minnesota-based Target’s executive vice president, Rick Gomez, emphasized the importance of value for consumers and the potential of dealworthy to attract new shoppers.
However, the retailer faces pressure to compete with low-cost rivals like Walmart, which has seen steady share price increases. Target’s reliance on own-brand products is crucial, especially as inflation has deterred customers from spending.
Despite beating profit expectations, Target’s sales have faltered, and it has faced challenges such as conservative boycotts of its Pride merchandise.
Walmart, on the other hand, has capitalized on customers’ budget constraints and has made significant gains in the online grocery market, outpacing Target in e-commerce growth. Target is exploring options to enhance its online presence, including a potential paid membership service, but has yet to make an official announcement.
Experts like Marshall Fisher from Wharton suggest that Target’s new budget brand could be seen as a desperate move rather than a strategic one. Fisher doubts that emulating Walmart’s pricing will be effective and notes that Walmart often comes out cheaper in price comparisons. He also warns that Target needs to clarify its competitive strategy, as it currently tries to be “everything to everyone.”
