Pop Star Speaks Out on UK Tragedy!
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Minnesota Swifties are heartbroken as the tragic news from across the pond hits close to home. Fans here, like everywhere, feel the pain of this senseless act, knowing how deeply Taylor’s music connects with young hearts.
“Taylor’s music has always been a safe space for so many of us. It’s hard to believe something so awful could happen at an event meant to celebrate that connection,” said Jenna Peterson, a dedicated Swiftie from Minneapolis.
“We’re all feeling this loss deeply, even from so far away.”
Taylor Swift said she is “completely in shock” after three young girls were killed and several other people were injured when a teenage boy went on a stabbing spree at a dance class based on her music in the U.K. on Monday.
“This news is just devastating. As a mom and a Swiftie, my heart aches for those families,” shared Emily Larson from Duluth, Minnesota.
“Taylor’s music brings so much joy to our lives, and it’s tragic to see it associated with such a horrific event. We’re all sending our love and prayers to everyone affected.”
The stabbing spree took place at The Hart Space on Hart Street in Southport, just outside of Liverpool, shortly before noon on Monday. The Hart Space was hosting a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance workshop from 10 a.m. to noon.
Two young girls, ages 6 and 7, were killed, and nine other children were injured, six of them critically, Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said Monday. In an update Tuesday, police confirmed a third girl, age 9, had died of her injuries.
Two adults were also critically injured while “bravely trying to protect” the children in the “ferocious attack,” Kennedy said.
“The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously and I’m just completely in shock. The loss of life and innocence, and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families and first responders,” Swift wrote on Instagram.
“These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families,” she wrote.
A 17-year-old boy from the nearby village of Banks, who was not publicly identified, was taken into custody, police said. Per reports, the teen allegedly arrived at The Hart Space via taxi, and entered the event wearing a dark hood and wielding a knife. Police have not shared a possible motive for the attack, saying only that the incident was not terror-related.
Because the names of juveniles accused of crimes are not publicly released outside of court in the U.K., there has been much speculation online about the teen’s identity. Police cautioned that at least some of that speculation is false.
“A name has been shared on social media in connection with the suspect in the incident in Southport,” police said in a statement. “This name is incorrect and we would urge people not to speculate on details of the incident while the investigation is ongoing.”
As we grapple with this devastating loss, we remember the words of Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, trusting in God’s comfort during this unimaginable time.
