CINCINNATI, OH – In a troubling case that highlights the vulnerability of at-risk students, a former academic support teacher at one of Cincinnati, Ohio‘s elite Catholic institutions now faces up to 15 years behind bars. What began as a program meant to help struggling boys allegedly evolved into a serious breach of trust with life-altering consequences.
Emily Nutley, 42, is confronting six counts of sexual battery, classified as third-degree felonies, following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old boy at St. Xavier High School. The charges stem from incidents that reportedly occurred during her brief tenure at the prestigious Jesuit boys’ school.
Teacher’s Position of Trust Exploited in Shocking Abuse Case
Hired in fall 2023 to supervise a program supporting academically challenged students, Nutley allegedly used her position to initiate inappropriate contact with a vulnerable participant in her program.
According to Hamilton County prosecutors, what started with inappropriate text messages and explicit photographs escalated to physical encounters by mid-November, both on and off school grounds.
Authorities Uncover Pattern of Persistent Pursuit
Investigators report that some incidents took place in Nutley’s campus office. When the student attempted to terminate the relationship, Nutley allegedly persisted in making unwanted contact through text messages. The inappropriate relationship came to light through the school’s internal investigation, prompting administrators to alert Springfield Township Police.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers expressed strong condemnation of the situation, emphasizing how the accused had betrayed her responsibility to help a vulnerable student, instead allegedly exploiting the relationship for inappropriate purposes.
School Leadership Responds as Community Reels
The school terminated Nutley’s employment in October. St. Xavier’s leadership, through President Tim Riley, maintains their belief that this represents an isolated incident. The school has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for its community, requesting prayers for all affected parties.
If convicted, Nutley will face mandatory sexual offender registration requirements in addition to potential prison time. Her court appearance is scheduled for November 8.
The breach of trust at St. Xavier has shattered the foundational bond between student and mentor – one that transforms lives when honored, but leaves deep wounds when broken. As this case moves through the courts, the school community grapples with questions that stretch far beyond a single classroom.
