How To Teach Your Grandkids About Faith in a Digital Age: Get ‘Em Glued to God (Not Screens)

Kids are glued to their devices, but here’s how you can pass down faith without losing them to the digital world! 🌐 #News #Lifestyle #Family #Faith

ST. PAUL, MN – I was chatting with my sister the other day, and we couldn’t help but laugh at how different things are for kids today compared to when we were growing up. Back then, we played outside until the streetlights came on, but now it seems like kids are glued to their phones and tablets 24/7. It got us thinking—how do you pass on something as important as faith when there’s so much digital noise competing for their attention?

In a world filled with distractions, teaching your grandkids about God can feel like an uphill battle. But with a little creativity, and a willingness to meet them where they are, passing down your faith is still possible.

Why Faith Still Matters in a Digital Age

With everything moving at lightning speed, faith provides a sense of stability and purpose that no app or video game ever could. Now more than ever, kids need something to ground them in a world where trends come and go faster than you can keep up.

Passing down your faith isn’t just about tradition—it’s about giving your grandkids values, a moral compass, and a sense of something bigger than themselves.

Even though they’re growing up in a digital age, the core values of faith—kindness, compassion, honesty, and love—are timeless.

Embrace Technology, Don’t Fear It

While it might seem like technology is the enemy, it doesn’t have to be. There are so many tools out there that can actually help you teach your grandkids about God. Instead of fighting the tech, embrace it. Look into kid-friendly Bible apps, fun Christian music playlists, or even YouTube channels that make faith-based content for young audiences.

My hubby Jack and I even have a special Faith-based YouTube channel, check it out here.

For instance, you can download an app that offers daily Bible verses or devotionals. Maybe suggest a bedtime routine where you read a Bible story together over video chat if they live far away. Or, find a Christian podcast you can listen to with them while driving to soccer practice. These small moments help build their connection to faith without overwhelming them.

Create Real-Life Moments of Faith

While digital tools are great, nothing beats real-life, face-to-face interactions. Make it a point to create those meaningful moments with your grandkids. Whether it’s praying before meals, reading them a Bible story at bedtime, or simply sharing how your faith helped you through a difficult time, those little things stick with them.

You could also invite them to a church service or watch one together online if they’re not local. You don’t have to make it all about structured “lessons” on faith—sometimes, it’s the everyday actions that speak the loudest.

Balance Screen Time with Real-Life Connections

Let’s face it—getting kids to unplug isn’t easy. But you can help create a balance. Try setting aside a tech-free hour when you’re spending time together, and use that time for something faith-based. It could be as simple as talking about what they’re thankful for that day or reading a short devotional together.

You don’t need to make it a battle. Frame it as a chance for the family to connect, talk, and reflect. Kids often respond better when it feels like a shared activity instead of a “rule” they have to follow.

Keep the Conversation Going

Teaching your grandkids about faith doesn’t have to be a one-time conversation. In fact, it shouldn’t be. Keep the lines of communication open, both in person and online. Whether it’s sending them a text with an uplifting Bible verse or having a heartfelt chat about what’s going on in their lives, show them that faith is something that can be lived out every day.

In the end, passing down faith is more about love and presence than any specific method. Even in this fast-paced, tech-heavy world, you can still plant seeds of faith that will grow and thrive for years to come. Have any helpful tips or idea of your own? I’d love to hear them!
