NASHVILLE, TN – My hubby Jack and I were spending the afternoon volunteering at our church in Franklin, Tennessee. We were tidying up the kitchen when we met Ethel, a charming older woman who had a solution for every mess. Seriously, she’s like the MacGyver of household products. Before we knew it, Ethel was rattling off tips that could save anyone time, money, and headaches. Now, I’m sharing her best advice with you—because you deserve an easier life! Hehe.

1. Vinegar for Sparkling Windows

Ethel swears by vinegar for cleaning windows and mirrors. Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle, spritz the surface, and wipe it down with a microfiber cloth. No streaks, just shine!

2. Baking Soda to Unclog Drains

Have a clogged sink? Ethel’s go-to fix is baking soda. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar. Let it fizz for 10-15 minutes, then flush with hot water.

3. Lemon Peels for a Fresh-Smelling Garbage Disposal

Ethel says you should never toss lemon peels without giving them a job first. Drop them in your garbage disposal, turn it on, and let the natural oils clean and deodorize the blades.

4. Coffee Grounds to Eliminate Fridge Odors

If your fridge smells funky, Ethel’s solution is simple. Place a bowl of used coffee grounds inside, and it will absorb odors in no time.

5. Toothpaste to Polish Silver

Ethel revealed that plain white toothpaste is a silver-polishing secret. Apply a small amount to tarnished areas, rub gently, rinse, and dry for a shiny finish.

6. Rice to Clean Narrow Bottles

Got a bottle that’s impossible to scrub? Ethel suggests adding rice, water, and a drop of dish soap. Swirl it around, and the grains will scrub the inside for you.

7. Aluminum Foil for Scrubbing Pans

If you’re out of steel wool, crumpled aluminum foil works just as well, according to Ethel. It’s perfect for scrubbing off tough baked-on residue.

8. Salt to Clean Cast Iron Pans

Ethel insists that soap shouldn’t touch your cast iron. Instead, she sprinkles coarse salt onto the pan and scrubs it with a paper towel or cloth to lift stuck-on food.

9. Olive Oil to Shine Wood Furniture

Ethel mixes olive oil and lemon juice (equal parts) to make a DIY furniture polish. Apply it with a soft cloth to restore wood’s natural luster.

10. Cornstarch to Freshen Up Carpets

To tackle carpet odors, Ethel says to sprinkle cornstarch across the area, let it sit for 30 minutes, and vacuum it up. Your carpet will smell fresh and feel softer.

Tricks To Make Life Easier!

Ethel’s advice has saved me countless times. If you try any of these, let me know how they work for you. Sometimes, the simplest tricks can make life so much easier—just ask Ethel!
