MEMPHIS, TN — A 45-year-old Tennessee man faces serious charges following a disturbing incident involving a 16-year-old girl and her newborn baby. James Boothe was indicted by a grand jury on multiple counts tied to the case.

Charges and Investigation Begin

Boothe, a resident of Memphis, faces two counts of trafficking for commercial sex acts, promoting prostitution involving minors aged 12 to 18, continuous sexual abuse of a child, and aggravated statutory rape. The investigation started on January 27 when Memphis police responded to a suspicious call at approximately 9 a.m. in the 3100 block of Teakrock Lane, located within the Flairwood Apartments.

At the scene, a 16-year-old girl approached officers, explaining that a man she identified as “James” had dropped her off after she gave birth roughly two hours earlier.

Authorities later confirmed this man was James Boothe. According to the girl, Boothe had been driving her to a hospital when she went into labor and delivered a baby girl in the vehicle.

Grim Details Emerge

The teen told police that after the birth, Boothe took the infant from the car seat, placed the body in a black plastic bag, and discarded it in a dumpster behind a Shell gas station at 1312 E. Shelby Drive in Memphis.

She also revealed that she had been in a “relationship” with Boothe for three years. Officers promptly searched the gas station dumpster and located the deceased newborn inside a black plastic bag, as described.

Surveillance footage from the gas station captured a man matching Boothe’s description arriving in a dark Infiniti SUV, walking to the dumpster, and disposing of a black plastic bag. Police noted that Boothe owns an Infiniti QX5, aligning with the vehicle seen in the video.

The cause of the baby’s death has not been publicly disclosed by authorities.

Boothe’s Arrest and Admissions

Police tracked down Boothe following the incident. He reportedly confirmed that he picked the girl up from her home and brought her to his residence.

Initially, Boothe faced a charge of abuse of a corpse, but the grand jury’s indictment expanded the case significantly.

Details regarding the trafficking and prostitution charges remain undisclosed by law enforcement.

Current Status

Boothe is currently held at the Shelby County Jail, where his bond has been set at $1.25 million.

The case continues to unfold as authorities process the evidence and prepare for legal proceedings.
