NASHVILLE, TN — What started as an idyllic dolphin encounter during spring break spiraled into a medical emergency for a Tennessee mother of two, leaving her stuck in Jamaica and desperately seeking a way home.
The Unexpected Encounter
Cierra Stockard, who lives with sickle cell anemia, was enjoying a swim with dolphins when one of the marine mammals lifted her into the air. The playful moment took a dramatic turn as she crashed down onto the creature’s dorsal fin, sustaining injuries that required immediate medical attention.
Medical Crisis Abroad
The impact left Stockard with severe bruising spanning an area equivalent to three apples. Her condition, complicated by her sickle cell anemia, required emergency surgery and multiple blood transfusions at a Montego Bay hospital. The force of the impact was so severe that Stockard compared it to being in a vehicular collision.
Race Against Time
Currently stranded in Jamaica with some family members, Stockard faces mounting challenges. While using medication brought from home to manage her sickle cell condition, she requires additional medical support beyond what she can handle alone. Her medical team suggests she might need a third blood transfusion.
Desperate Push for Return
The family has launched a fundraising campaign seeking $55,000 to facilitate Stockard’s return to the United States. Despite reaching out to the embassy, the family reports handling most arrangements independently, with only limited guidance from official channels.
Her aunt, Kimberley Watkins, and sister, Nevaeh Garton, are spearheading efforts to bring her home, emphasizing the urgency of her situation. The family continues their desperate push to reunite Stockard with proper medical care in Tennessee.
A Call for Prayer and Support
As we reflect on Cierra Stockard’s harrowing ordeal, let us honor her and all those touched by this tragedy with our prayers and support.
Her resilience in the face of such an unexpected trial reminds us of the strength found in faith, as Psalm 46:1 assures us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
May Cierra, her family, and all who suffer find comfort in God’s unwavering presence, and may their burden be lifted through the compassion and generosity of those moved to help.
