MURFREESBORO, TN – A 17-year-old girl disappeared without a trace after attending a basketball game at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), leaving authorities scrambling for answers. Ja’Cayia Alsup was last seen leaving the Murphy Center in Murfressboro, Tennessee on February 8, dressed in a black track jacket, brown leggings, gray shoes, and glasses. Despite immediate concerns from her family, police took nearly a week to notify the public—raising serious questions about their response.

Missing Teen’s Case Raises Concerns

MTSU police confirmed Alsup was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as a missing person the same day she vanished. However, officials held off on alerting the public for five days, stating that detectives were pursuing leads before making the case widely known.

Authorities also clarified that an Amber Alert was never issued because the case did not meet the criteria—specifically, there was no evidence of an abduction.

The delay in releasing information has drawn criticism, especially as Alsup remains missing.

MTSU officials admitted this is an unusual case, with some officers saying they haven’t encountered a disappearance like this in their time on the force. Now, as the days pass, concern continues to grow over the missing teen’s safety.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal

Alsup is black. She is described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 110 pounds, and was last seen carrying a silver necklace and a brown wristlet. Despite law enforcement’s ongoing investigation, there have been no major updates on her whereabouts.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Detective Sergeant Trevor Cheney at 615-904-8464. With no signs of Alsup and questions surrounding the initial handling of the case, the search for answers is becoming more urgent by the day.
