SMITHVILLE, TN – Beneath the still waters of Center Hill Lake near Smithville, Tennessee, something eerie lingers. The ghostly remains of a lost town, submerged cemeteries, and ancient Native American burial grounds create a sinister mystery that refuses to rest.

Lakes are often places of laughter, relaxation, and summer adventures. But not all lakes are peaceful. Some hold secrets—secrets that whisper through the currents, secrets that refuse to be forgotten.

Just over an hour east of Nashville, Center Hill Lake hides a chilling past beneath its glassy surface. You might think you’re floating over nothing but dark water, but what if you’re wrong? What if something is watching from below?

The Town That Vanished Beneath the Waves

In 1948, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the Center Hill Dam, drowning over 18,000 acres of land under deep, murky water. Homes, schools, churches—all swallowed whole. The town was forced to move, but its history remained, trapped beneath the waves.

Graveyards were exhumed, with bodies carefully relocated to higher ground. But did they get them all? Some locals say no.

Some believe not every resting place was disturbed before the waters rose. Could there still be coffins resting beneath the lake? What happens when the dead are left behind?

A Watery Burial—And a Ghostly Presence

As if the thought of forgotten graves isn’t unsettling enough, Center Hill Lake also covers two ancient Native American burial mounds.

When Smithsonian archaeologists explored the area before it was flooded, they uncovered artifacts dating back an astonishing 15,000 years.

Now, those sacred sites are lost beneath the depths, forever hidden in a section of the lake called The Narrow.

Locals report strange occurrences—unexplained lights flickering beneath the water, eerie wails carried on the wind, and a feeling of being watched while floating above certain areas.

Some refuse to swim in the lake at night, fearing what might be lurking in the darkness below.

Dare to Explore Cemetery Cove?

If you’re brave enough, you can visit the lake’s most haunted section—Cemetery Cove. Canoe The Caney offers haunted nighttime canoe trips through the chilling waters, where guides share spine-tingling tales of the town that vanished.
