WHITEHALL, OH – An ordinary trash collection turned dangerous when an oxygen tank, carelessly thrown away, exploded inside a garbage truck in Whitehall, Ohio. The dramatic incident unfolded on Wednesday, leaving city officials warning of the risks posed by hazardous waste.
The explosion happened along the 4000 Block of Elbern Avenue. On Thursday, city officials released a video capturing the moment of chaos.
Two Local Waste Services workers were seen dumping residential garbage into the truck when one of them unknowingly emptied a bin containing the dangerous oxygen tank. As he prepared to grab another bin, the tank ignited, triggering an explosion that sent debris flying toward him. Instinctively, the worker shielded his head and scrambled to safety.
Officials Warn of Hazardous Waste Disposal
Authorities confirmed that the blast was caused by âan oxygen tank that was illegally placed in a garbage can.â
City officials issued a warning to residents about the dangers lurking in improperly discarded items. They urged the public to handle and dispose of hazardous materials correctly.
âKnow the dangers! Hazardous and explosive materials can be found in everyday items, so be aware of proper handling and storage,â they cautioned.
Workers Escape Serious Injury
Despite the chaos, the workers avoided severe injuries. The Whitehall Police Department expressed relief that the outcome wasnât worse.
âWe are very thankful the workers were not seriously injured in this senseless act,â the department stated on social media.
