SPRING, TX — A Texas woman has been charged with capital murder after allegedly drowning a 4-year-old relative in what she called a “baptism.” Authorities say Nakia Martin, 39, was babysitting her cousin’s children in Spring, Texas, when the incident occurred.

Martin reportedly called a family member on September 9, 2023, after finding the child unresponsive. When police arrived, they discovered the girl dead in a bedroom near a bathroom with puddles surrounding a large, dirty Jacuzzi tub. Martin appeared distressed and gave conflicting statements about what happened.

She admitted being in the bathtub with the children but claimed she did not remember taking the bath or calling to report a drowning. At one point, she stated, “I killed a kid.”

Shocking Allegations from Surviving Children

Two surviving children, ages 6 and 8, provided disturbing accounts of that night.

One child told police, “something happened, the Devil.” They described Martin using what she called “blessing oil” and attempting to baptize them. The 6-year-old girl said Martin held her younger sister underwater, causing her to bleed, and also tried to drown her. The girl recalled Martin warning her to keep quiet and threatening her with Hell.

A boy present in the tub during the incident said he saw his sister struggling to breathe and pulling Martin’s hair. He claimed Martin pushed the child back under the water and stopped him from helping her.

Investigation and Arrest

Martin was not arrested immediately. A probable cause affidavit was filed in December 2024, and authorities took her into custody later that month. Prosecutors stated that the delay was due to ongoing interviews and the autopsy report.

Martin was extradited to Harris County, Texas, and formally charged with capital murder of a child under 10 years old. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 20, 2025.
