LAREDO, TX – Federal agents at the Texas border uncovered a massive drug smuggling operation, seizing over 37 pounds of cocaine worth nearly half a million dollars. Two Mexican citizens were taken into custody after officers discovered the illegal haul hidden inside a vehicle attempting to cross into the United States.
Officers Uncover 37 Pounds of Cocaine
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials confirmed the bust happened on Friday at the Laredo Port of Entry’s Juarez-Lincoln Bridge.
Officers stopped a 2020 Honda CR-V for a closer inspection, suspecting something was amiss. With the help of a non-intrusive inspection system and drug-sniffing canines, authorities uncovered 15 concealed packages stashed within the vehicle.
When tested, the contents of those packages were identified as cocaine, weighing a total of 37 pounds and carrying an estimated street value of $498,940.
Suspects in Custody as Investigation Continues
The illegal drugs, along with the vehicle, were immediately seized by CBP.
The driver, a 70-year-old Mexican citizen, and his 49-year-old male passenger, also a Mexican citizen, were swiftly arrested.
Special agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) took over the case, launching a criminal probe into the trafficking attempt.
CBP Officials Applaud Officers’ Efforts
Port Director Albert Flores of the Laredo Port of Entry praised his team’s swift action, stating, “The experience and tenacity of our frontline CBP officers combined with the effective use of non-intrusive inspection system technology resulted in the takedown of this load of cocaine.”
Authorities continue investigating the suspects’ potential ties to larger trafficking networks.
