PHARR, TX — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Texas confiscated cocaine valued at over $6.2 million at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility on Wednesday. The seizure took place during a routine inspection of a commercial tractor trailer arriving from Mexico, hauling a shipment of plastic rolls.

The incident unfolded when a CBP officer flagged the tractor trailer for a detailed check. Using nonintrusive inspection (NII) equipment and assistance from a canine team, officers uncovered 150 packages of alleged cocaine hidden within the plastic rolls.

A physical inspection confirmed the find, with the narcotics weighing 470.68 pounds (213.5 kg). Authorities estimate the street value of the seized cocaine at $6,284,586.

Driver Arrested, Investigation Underway

Following the bust, CBP’s Office of Field Operations (OFO) handed over the tractor trailer, the narcotics, and the driver to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Officers from the state agency arrested the driver and launched a criminal investigation into the smuggling attempt. The swift coordination between federal and state authorities ensured the suspect was taken into custody and the drugs removed from circulation.

Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, who oversees the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, praised the diligence of the CBP team. He noted that their efforts demonstrate the critical role of thorough inspections in stopping illegal narcotics from crossing the border.

A Major Blow to Drug Trafficking

The seizure marks a significant disruption to drug trafficking operations along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The cocaine, hidden inside a common item like plastic rolls, shows the clever tactics smugglers employ to avoid being caught. CBP’s use of advanced technology and trained canine units proved essential in identifying and intercepting the shipment.
