Routine Border Check Uncovers Hidden Cache of Cocaine
CBPâs Office of Field Operations reported that the young woman attempted to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico via the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge, driving a 2015 Nissan.
Upon initial inspection, officers decided to refer the vehicle for a secondary examination, where non-intrusive inspection technology and a canine unit flagged suspicious areas within the vehicle.
Canines and High-Tech Scanning Reveal 20 Drug Packages
After a more in-depth examination, officers uncovered 20 packages concealed within the vehicle. These packages, weighing a total of 45.54 pounds, allegedly contained cocaine with an estimated street value of over $600,000.
âOur CBP officers use multiple enforcement tools when conducting their inspections and their efforts yielded this significant drug seizure, keeping it from reaching our streets,â stated Tater Ortiz, Port Director at the Brownsville Port of Entry.
The successful interception underscores the CBPâs use of advanced technology and trained canine units in securing the nationâs borders against drug trafficking.
Homeland Security Agents Launch Investigation After Arrest
Following the seizure, CBP officers took control of both the narcotics and the vehicle. Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested the driver and initiated a criminal investigation to determine potential connections and further suspects involved in the attempted smuggling.
This operation highlights the vigilance of border security personnel in identifying threats before they reach communities. With multiple layers of technology and expertise, CBPâs efforts aim to prevent dangerous narcotics from entering the U.S., reaffirming the agencyâs dedication to public safety.
