HOUSTON, TX – The FBI says it has thwarted a potential terrorist attack in Houston, arresting a man accused of supporting ISIS and plotting violent acts. The suspect, 28-year-old Anas Said, was taken into custody on Nov. 8 at his apartment complex in Houston. Authorities allege that Said was attempting to provide material support to the terrorist group ISIS, according to federal officials.
“We stopped a potential terrorist attack from happening right here in Houston,” the FBI Houston field office announced on social media Thursday. “Any day we can publicly say that is a good day.”
Arrest and Charges Announced
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas stated that Said has been indicted on a charge of attempting to provide material support to ISIS. According to court documents, Said’s social media activity allegedly revealed his support for the terrorist group and its violent actions.
Investigators said that Said had discussed conducting an attack on military recruiting centers in the area. He also allegedly offered his apartment as a sanctuary for ISIS operatives, boasted about wanting to carry out a “9/11-style” attack if given the resources, and worked to create propaganda for the group.
Evidence Uncovered in Searches
During the investigation, authorities searched Said’s residence, vehicle, and electronic devices. Prosecutors claim these searches revealed materials related to creating and distributing ISIS propaganda.
Searches of Said’s residence, vehicle and electronic devices allegedly ‘revealed Said’s activities relating to the creation and dissemination of propaganda on behalf of ISIS,’ prosecutors said in a statement.
Potential Penalties
If convicted, Said faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Federal officials emphasized the importance of identifying and stopping potential threats before they are carried out.
The FBI’s swift action highlights the ongoing need to remain vigilant against extremist threats on U.S. soil, ensuring the safety of local communities.
