LIBERTY, TX – A tense standoff unfolded at the Liberty County Jail on Thursday morning when a standard contraband sweep spiraled into a full-blown riot. Inmates clashed with authorities, barricading doors and shattering windows, forcing deputies to unleash chemical agents to restore order in this chaotic scene from southeast Texas.

Contraband Sweep Ignites Inmate Rebellion

The trouble kicked off around 9:30 a.m. on February 27, 2025, during a planned contraband check at the Liberty County Jail.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, 44 inmates across two dorm units resisted the search. They blocked doorways with makeshift barriers and smashed windows, escalating a routine procedure into a dangerous confrontation.

Jail staff quickly retreated to a secure hallway as the situation intensified. Backup from the sheriff’s office and nearby police departments rushed to the scene to tackle the unrest.

Gas Clears the Way for Control

Law enforcement regained command of one dorm unit without delay. However, the second dorm proved tougher to crack. Deputies turned to chemical agents, deploying gas to overpower the defiant inmates. Once inside, they subdued the group and brought the riot to an abrupt halt.

The sheriff’s office confirmed no officers were harmed during the clash. One key troublemaker among the inmates suffered injuries—details undisclosed—and received medical attention following the incident.

Aftermath and Accountability

Sheriff Bobby Rader announced that repairs to the damaged facility will require relocating some inmates.

Lt. John Bennett, speaking for the sheriff’s office, laid out a firm stance: “If you get arrested in Liberty County, you will be treated fairly and respectfully, and we expect the same in return. This behavior is unacceptable, and those responsible will face charges.”

Authorities anticipate “several” inmates will face legal consequences as the investigation continues.

The sheriff’s office remains tight-lipped about specific charges for now, but the message is clear: those who fueled the chaos will pay a price.
