MESQUITE, TX – A small business jet crashed in a fiery explosion Thursday morning, tragically killing the pilot and sending shockwaves through a quiet Texas neighborhood. The Cessna CitationJet went down just minutes after taking off from Mesquite Metro Airport around 7:30 a.m., bursting into flames as it slammed into a wooded area between a church and a residential community.
Dramatic video captured the aircraft plunging at full speed in a near-vertical nose dive before hitting the ground, leaving behind a massive black cloud of smoke.
Eyewitnesses described feeling the impact shake their homes, while firefighters scrambled to contain scattered spot fires ignited by the wreckage.
Witnesses Describe a Terrifying Scene
Latresha Calvin, a resident nearby, was walking her children to school when she heard a deafening bang. Her house trembled as if struck by something. Rushing outside, she was met with a horrifying sight—thick smoke rising behind her yard.
Maria Yepez, another witness, smelled strong fumes while dropping her children off. The odor was unlike anything she had experienced, different from chimney smoke or a house fire.
Pastor Kevin Laugh of the Christian Center of Mesquite revealed an eerie coincidence—he had dreamed of a plane crashing on the property just days before the accident.
He recalled rarely remembering his dreams, but this one stuck with him. Standing near the crash site, he realized how close disaster came to hitting his home, the church, or a densely populated residential area.
Investigation Underway
Authorities confirmed that the pilot was the only person on board and did not survive. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) arrived in Mesquite on Friday to begin investigating the cause of the crash.
Though no one on the ground was injured, the crash left the neighborhood rattled. Residents who witnessed the tragedy are left with lingering questions about how the routine flight turned into a fatal disaster in seconds.
