BAYTOWN, TX — Authorities in Texas have arrested 31-year-old Ty Vaughn on charges of murdering his fiancé, 27-year-old Luis Banos Norberto, in a case that unfolded at an apartment complex near Houston. The arrest took place on Saturday, following an investigation into Norberto’s death on January 14, 2025. Vaughn is currently held at Harris County Jail on a $500,000 bond and has a court date scheduled for Monday, March 10, 2025.
Incident Details Emerge
The incident occurred in the early hours of January 14 at a Baytown apartment complex.
According to a criminal complaint, Vaughn allegedly shot Norberto in the face and then repositioned his body to stage the scene as a suicide. Vaughn claimed he returned home shortly after 5:30 a.m. to find Norberto dead.
However, surveillance video revealed Vaughn arrived home shortly after 4 a.m. Neighbors reported hearing a gunshot just minutes after his return.
Around 4:30 a.m., Vaughn sent a text to Norberto saying he was worried about why Norberto wasn’t responding—despite Norberto already being deceased.
Vaughn waited roughly 90 minutes, until after 5:30 a.m., to call 911. During the call, he told dispatchers that his spouse was dead, adding that his own life felt over. When officers arrived, they found Norberto’s body on a bed with a lever-action rifle placed against his arm and a torn photograph of the couple nearby.
Investigation Reveals Key Evidence
Detectives uncovered several critical pieces of evidence during the investigation.
A search of Vaughn’s phone showed he had looked up the question, “Can I kill an illegal human,” prior to the incident.
The criminal complaint also noted that Vaughn frequently brought up Norberto’s status as an undocumented immigrant during conversations with police. Norberto, originally from Guerrero, Mexico, had family living in Baytown, according to his obituary.
In an interview with media before his arrest, Vaughn stated that law enforcement was fully aware of the situation. When offered sympathy, he responded with a casual remark, saying it was just the way things were.
Arrest and Charges
Vaughn now faces a murder charge in connection with Norberto’s death. The arrest affidavit and surveillance footage contradicted his initial account, leading to his apprehension on Saturday. He remains in custody at Harris County Jail.
The case has drawn attention in the Baytown community as authorities continue to process the evidence ahead of Vaughn’s court appearance today.
