SAN ANTONIO, TX – A Texas man’s alleged scheme to carry out mass shootings at local public spots was disrupted earlier this year, and he has now pleaded guilty to a federal firearms charge, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas announced Thursday.
Cameron Darrick Peterson, 20, was first identified as a potential threat in January 2024, when he tried to purchase a 12-gauge shotgun at a pawn shop in New Braunfels.
According to court documents, Peterson’s attempts were thwarted twice, once in January and again in May, when background checks blocked him from buying the firearm due to his age and weapon choice. Federal authorities believe this setback may have intensified Peterson’s plans.
After Peterson’s second attempt to obtain the shotgun, the FBI initiated an investigation, securing a warrant for his arrest on June 5. New Braunfels Police Department officers took Peterson into custody, while FBI agents conducted a search of his residence.
In his home, authorities seized a modified .22-caliber long rifle with a sawed-off buttstock, six loaded magazines, and 60 rounds of ammunition—signs of an escalating plan to execute mass violence.
On June 6, with a federal warrant, FBI agents searched Peterson’s Instagram account, uncovering further details of his intentions. He reportedly shared explicit plans to attack a gas station, revealing a disturbing fixation on public spaces as targets.
While in jail that same day, Peterson was recorded giving instructions to a witness, instructing them to either hide or destroy a video that showed him surveilling a grocery store—a chilling piece of evidence that linked him to further attack planning.
A subsequent search of Peterson’s residence on June 10 led to the discovery of an improvised explosive device (IED), which agents described as “readily operational.” Agents also found aerosol cans and other items for constructing additional explosive devices. As Peterson was not of legal age to register the IED in the National Firearms Registry, the device was categorized as illegal.
Peterson pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to receive a firearm with the intention to commit a felony. This charge carries significant consequences, including a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing is set for February 5, 2025.
This case reflects the intensive work by federal agents and local police to intercept violent plans before they reach the public. It highlights the vigilance required in detecting and preventing threats that may be closer to home than anyone would expect.
