SAN ANTONIO, TX — A ten-year-old German Shepherd named Frenky, a seasoned military working dog, has officially traded combat zones for couch cushions after reuniting with his former handler, Army Staff Sergeant Kristin Vanderzanden. Their emotional Texas reunion came years after the pair served side by side during deployments in the Middle East.

Little Feet, Big Mission

Frenky’s military résumé reads like a hero’s tale. Over four years together, he and Kristin supported two grueling combat tours—nine months in Afghanistan and ten in Iraq. He was trained in explosive detection and bite work, serving not only in warzones but also on approximately 20 top-tier Secret Service assignments. Frenky helped guard global leaders including the U.S. President and Vice President, the First Lady, and international dignitaries.

The bond forged between soldier and dog in those high-stakes environments was unbreakable. During one harrowing mission with U.S. Special Forces, the team endured sniper fire and mortar attacks, resulting in American casualties. Frenky remained unshaken, continuing his explosive detection duties amid the chaos. His bravery and steady presence earned admiration from elite forces and turned him into a beloved base mascot.

Heartbreak and Hope

In 2021, Kristin was reassigned to Fort Drum, NY, and was forced to leave Frenky behind—a painful separation she compared to losing a child. But she never gave up hope.

As soon as she heard that Frenky was eligible for retirement, Kristin began working on bringing him home. A friend from Lackland had told her about the American Humane Society’s efforts to reunite handlers with their retired military dogs, and she wasted no time reaching out.

Ride Home to Retirement

American Humane Society stepped in and made the reunion possible. They transported Frenky from Fort Johnson in Louisiana directly to Kristin’s home in San Antonio, covering all travel expenses. And the organization didn’t stop there—they also pledged to provide lifelong veterinary care for Frenky, honoring his loyal service to his handler and his country.

Now, after a lifetime of action, the German Shepherd is adjusting to a new chapter filled with comfort, companionship, and plenty of belly rubs. Kristin says Frenky will finally get to just be a dog again—relaxing on the couch instead of guarding it.
