BEXAR COUNTY, TX – A moment of carelessness ended in unimaginable loss Monday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas, when a toddler found a rifle inside a parked car and accidentally shot an infant. The heartbreaking incident unfolded in a hospital parking lot, leaving a family shattered and raising serious questions about gun safety.
The Tragic Incident
The incident took place around 1 p.m. outside the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital. Police say three children were in the back of the parked car: a 3-year-old, a 2-year-old, and an infant between 10 and 11 months old. An adult woman was also present inside the vehicle with them.
According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, one of the toddlers found a loaded rifle in the rear of the vehicle. The child accidentally pulled the trigger, fatally striking the infant.
“The hospital took immediate action, and EMS, to see what the condition of the child was, but the child is deceased,” McManus said during a press conference Monday.
Response from Authorities
The infant, identified by the Bexar County Medical Examinerâs Office as Khamari Lang, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“What we have here today is a terrible, terrible tragedy,” McManus said, expressing the sorrow felt by everyone involved.
At this time, authorities have not disclosed the relationship between the woman and the children. It remains unclear whether any charges will be filed. The investigation is ongoing as police work to gather more details.
Gun Safety Under Scrutiny
This tragic event is a sobering reminder of the risks posed by unsecured firearms, especially in environments where young children are present. Each year, accidental shootings involving children highlight the need for responsible gun ownership. Secure storage of firearmsâkeeping guns locked and unloadedâis vital in preventing such devastating accidents.
Advocates emphasize that incidents like these, though rare, are entirely avoidable. The responsibility of safe firearm storage rests with the adults in the household or vehicle to ensure that no child can access a loaded gun.
Honoring Those Affected
The loss of Khamari Lang has left a profound void, and the thoughts of many in the community are with the grieving family. There are no words to ease their sorrow, but we lift them up in prayer as they navigate this dark chapter.
As the Bible reminds us in Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” In times of unimaginable grief, may this promise bring them comfort, knowing they are not alone.
