WACO, TX – A quiet Valentine’s Day in Waco, Texas, turned chaotic when a 57-year-old woman allegedly lunged at her husband with a kitchen knife. The couple’s argument over a disappointing gift spiraled out of control, landing Rita Tate behind bars. Police say the violent outburst happened late Friday night, February 14, 2025, at their home 100 miles south of Dallas.

Trouble Brews Over Valentine’s Day Necklace

The trouble started early that morning when Tate’s husband handed her a necklace for Valentine’s Day. She reportedly grew furious, expecting a bracelet instead.

Her husband left for work, hoping the tension would ease by the time he returned. It didn’t. When he walked back through the door at 4 p.m., Tate was still fuming about the unwanted jewelry.

Argument Turns Deadly

After a few hours away, the husband returned home, only to find Tate waiting—armed and ready. Police say she grabbed a large kitchen knife and began shouting at him.

At one point, she pointed the blade his way, yelling a taunting challenge. Fearing for his safety, he pulled out his phone and recorded the encounter. That decision gave police clear evidence of Tate brandishing the weapon.

Police Step In

Waco Police Department officers arrived at the couple’s Black Horse Court residence around 10:20 p.m. after a frantic 911 call.

The husband let them inside, explaining how his wife’s anger had escalated into a life-threatening confrontation.

Authorities reviewed the video footage, confirming the knife in Tate’s hand. She was arrested on the spot and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Tate was taken to McLennan County Jail for processing following her arrest. By Thursday afternoon, records showed she was no longer in custody.
